This is one of the top 5 tools in all of my AutoCAD Electrical presentations. I can’t tell whether it has been voted so high because of the commands ability to save time or its pure coolness.
What does this command let us do? Well the simple description is this. It allows us to move from reference to reference across the project drawing set. Sounds simple right, this saves a ton of time when working on a big project. It also lets us move from the reports we can run inside of AutoCAD Electrical back out into our project. A great example when using the missing bill of material report, we now can find those missing items in seconds within our project.
Surfer Special Codes in the List Box
Notice the arrow pointing to the Type Column. This column informs the user of what type of item is being displayed on each line of the surfer list dialog box.

C – Component Symbol
P – Parent or Standalone Schematic Symbol
T – Terminal
W – Wire Number
# – Panel Layout Symbol
# np – Panel Layout nameplate reference
By understanding these codes you will be able to easily “surf” to the correct item you are looking for, saving time and effort.
Let’s take a look

Looking back through some of the past posts that we have done I saw the one about additional tools for drawings.
Well there are a whole lot more tools in this area that I wanted to give a preview to.
I found one that I use often in assemblies to check how many DOF or Degrees of Freedom are on a part.
Another really cool one is the ability to sort out your model tree alphabetically.
These can be found in the install path for your Inventor software.
i.e. – C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2009\SDK
Run the user tools install.
Then look here:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2009\SDK\UserTools\AssemblyTools

Digging a little deeper into those folders I traditionally over look that come with your Inventor media. I was surprised with a ton of great functionality. The latest one I have been playing with are those listed under drawing tools. C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2009\SDK\UserTools\DrawingTools. Here I found 3 handy items: Chain Dimension which can relieve you of some tedious work, Alpha Sort for automatically putting your drawings into alphabetical order and revision cloud a lot of people like the idea of using the revision clouds with Design Review I can add revision clouds right from Inventor I just don’t have the selection like I do with Design Review. With this it will create a sketch under the view that I will be applying it to. I thought it would be really cool if I could use crop view with it but unfortunately you can’t.
